3M 811 Removable Tape - Clear
Clear, matt finish, easy tear polyester tape, with a light tack, removable adhesive.
Used as a masking
for mount and frame
decoration. It gives
a very clean edge,
minimal bleeding and
easy removal.
Another application
is to help eliminate ‘blobbing’ when ruling lines on mounts. Place pieces at an angle across the row of marks at either end of the line when preparing a mount. Start the pen on one piece of tape and finish by stopping the pen on the tape at the other, see p.94.

Brown gum paper tape is still preferred by many framers for sealing the backs of pictures.
Be sure to wet it thoroughly with a sponge or through a dispenser, otherwise it will tend to bubble away from the frame. Often more durable in warm conditions.

High quality white gummed paper tape, 70gm2. It is made from lignin-free pulp, so has almost no acid. In Europe, MDF is rarely
used as a backing in
a frame. Most quality frames there have an acid-free white backing board, such as the Lion Conservation Grade backing board, p.66. Use this white gummed tape to finish off such
backs.
